Discover Höga Kusten – Sweden’s High Coast

Höga Kusten is located within easy reach of Sundsvall. This UNESCO World Natural Heritage site is known for its dramatic coastline, sweeping sea views and striking Nordic landscapes. Steep cliffs, forested hills, islands and open water create a landscape that feels both powerful and inviting.

A Landscape Shaped by Time

What makes Höga Kusten truly unique is the land uplift that has shaped the area since the last Ice Age and is still continuing today. When the inland ice retreated, the land began to rise again after having been pressed down by the enormous weight of the ice sheet. In Höga Kusten, this process has been more dramatic than anywhere else in the world, which is one of the main reasons the area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. At Skuleberget, the ancient shoreline can still be seen as high as 286 metres above today’s sea level, and the land continues to rise by around 8 millimetres each year. This gives the landscape a rare geological significance, but also a special sense of motion and time – a coastline that is still being shaped.

Outdoor Experiences in a World Heritage Setting

Today, Höga Kusten is also one of Sweden’s most inspiring destinations for outdoor recreation. The landscape invites you to explore it actively, whether on foot, on the water, or simply by following the rhythm of the terrain. The High Coast Trail stretches 135 kilometres through the World Heritage site, offering a varied mix of deep forests, mountain viewpoints, rocky shorelines, sandy beaches and sections close to the sea. Skuleskogen National Park is another highlight, with ancient forest, dramatic ravines and unforgettable hiking experiences that bring visitors close to the raw beauty of the region. Together, these landscapes create exceptional opportunities for hiking, kayaking, trail running and guided nature experiences before or after the conference.

For Euro’Meet participants, Höga Kusten offers something more than a nearby excursion. It is an opportunity to experience a landscape that is both uniquely Scandinavian and globally significant – a place where world-class nature, deep time and outdoor adventure meet.
